In what would become part of the founding mythos for KPFT, on May 11,1970 the station's transmitter was bombed, knocking KPFT off the air for three weeks.

Months later, in October, 1970 the transmitter would be bombed again, making KPFT the first, second, and to date only radio station to be bombed off the air in the United States.
