Before Radio: An Idea

The genesis of KPFT came from Houston journalists Larry Lee (AP) and Don Gardner (Houston Post) who had become disillusioned with the paucity of reporting on racial issues in the Houston media market.

In August 6, 1968 Lee rented a small office at 102 San Jacinto St. in Houston from October, 1969 until February, 1970 to serve as the base of operations for what would become KPFT.

Just over one year later, on October, 29, 1969 the FCC granted a conditional broadcast license to the newly christened KPFT.
