This Week's Letter

1977 letter

Kill Poodles For Texas!
You'll be glad ya' did!

I would like to give a vote of confidence to the Avant-Garde program of Tuesday nights. I listen to it regularly and enjoy having a couple while sitting around reading The Amazing Spider-Man.

I am very disinterested in the Spanish music, the news from India, and the Voice of Iranian ya-hoos, and would rather hear music at those times. However, I staunchly support their presence and continued airplay. As with, say, my interest in electronic music, the followers of these more esoteric shows deserve a part of the Pacifica pie.

I could truly go for an extended version of the Outer Space News at midnight, more reading on the air (as with the excellent H.P. Lovecraft piece), and continuation or expansion of Seeds, Future Rock, Embrace The Earth, Beginnings, Sirens, Wildenstein, Music Heard 'Round The World, and programs like them.

And to those who complain about the station or anything on it: If you can't stand the quacking, get away from the ducks.

Anyway, listen to him; Jack Cheese - he's a dummy.

Editor's Note

Received March 16, 1977, this letter make some important points that frequently come up in listener correspondence.

KPFT programming serves a diverse audience and no one is ever completely satisfied with scheduling or programming choices. Nevertheless, over and over, reasonable voices in the community reach the same conclusion; although not every program suits their taste, the goal of community radio should be to give everyone a voice on the airwaves, and it is that idea that is worth supporting.

Today, October 2, 2022, KPFT is finishing their first full week of live broadcasting and, like always, they need and depend on listener support to carry on.

About The Mailbag

The letters posted here were among the boxes recovered from 419 Lovett Blvd, as documented in The Mighty 90 Project post and are reminiscent of the work done at Found Magazine and PostSecret. The vast majority of letters date from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, although some newer materials of more recent vintage have been supplied by programmers.

Historically KPFT would, on occasion, read letters on the air and in some cases the letter writers explicitly ask NOT to be so presented. Attitudes towards consent and personal privacy are very different in 2022 as compared to the time these letters were mailed and no one then writing could have imagined the modern internet, much less this type of public sharing.

Accordingly, whenever a letter has personally identifiable information from a correspondent it will be lightly redacted to protect the privacy of the original author.
