The Challenge

As a Community radio station KPFT has always relied on listener sponsorship to keep the station solvent. In what may be the largest chicken-and-egg problem in station history, how does one raise money for a radio station when there is no radio?

KPFT would not begin broadcasting until 1970, but the two year period prior was a time of intense activity. Besides planning the technical, logistical, and legal aspects of opening a radio station, the founding members of KPFT had to generate a bankroll of funding to both pay actual bills and satisfy FCC solvency requirements.

Many of these challenges are outlined in The Houston Project memo.

The Solution

The documents presented in the following image gallery appear to be one method among many used to generate the initial tranche of funding needed to launch KPFT. It appears that the mailer presented here is the one alluded to in The Houston Project.
